What is NewSpeak?

NewSpeak

- Reinforces the State's totalitarian dominance of the people of Oceania.

- The intellectual purpose of Newspeak is to make Ingsoc-approved thoughts the only expressible thoughts.

- Simplified grammar and diminishing and restricted vocabulary designed to limit the individual's ability to think and articulate "subversive" concepts such as personal identity, self-expression and free will.

Leader of the Brotherhood, an underground rebel organization. He wrote the book read by Winston. He is the object of the daily Two Minutes Hate exercise designed to direct citizen frustration away from the Party. Considering the fact that WWII with its horror of the holocaust had just ended, the use of Goldstein as a scapegoat parallels the Nazis’ attempt to blame their problems on the Jews.
