Where and when does this take place?

Slide 12 - Question ouverte

All the events in this novel take place in a Dystopian London of the future. In the novel, London functions as the capital of one of the three world powers; Oceania. The other two world powers are also mentioned in this book: Eastasia and Eurasia.

As stated before, the story, supposedly, takes place from April 1984 till April 1985. As the book was written in 1949 the book can be seen as a ‘prediction’ of what the year 1984 could look like.

Early in the novel, Winston writes that “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four.” The motif comes full circle at the end of the novel after the torture Winston suffers in the Ministry of Love breaks his soul; he sits at the Chestnut Tree Café and traces “2 + 2 = 5” in the dust on his table.

Language As Mind Control
“‘Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.’”
