Als er een vorm van to be in de zin staat – Am, Are, Is, Was, Were of  Can, Could, Will, Would, Must – dan herhaal je die vorm in de aangeplakte vraag:

• You are tired, aren’t you? --> You aren’t tired, are you? 
• He was great, wasn’t he? -->He wasn’t great, was he?
  
• You will come, won’t you? --> You won’t come, will you?
  

She doesn’t look terrible, does she?

Na een ontkennende zin (-) is de aangeplakte vraag bevestigend (+)

She wasn’t right, was she?

These shirts don’t fit, do they?

Bij bijna alle andere werkwoorden in bevestigende zinnen gebruik je don’t, doesn’t of didn’t in de aangeplakte vraag:

She looks terrible, doesn’t she?

They got old, didn't they?

 Maar wanneer de eerste helft van de zin al don’t, doesn’t of didn’t bevat gebruik je in de aangeplakte vraag do, does of did:

She doesn’t look terrible, does she?

They don't like it, do they?
