Why not told

Het citaat geeft al aan de salarisinfo in het verleden was verteld. Als je dan reported speech gebruikt, moet die grammaticale tijd eentje verder het verleden in, om aan te duiden dat de ene actie verder in het verleden plaatsvindt dan de andere.

'I will explain the process again,' he said.

He insisted on ____

Verb + preposition + -ing form

'I'll tell the boss!' Bill said.

Bill threatened ____

Why not telling?

Verb + infinitive (to tell)

het verschil tussen gerund en infinitive is vaak dat de gerund gaat over activiteiten die met enige regelmaat voorkomen terwijl dat bij de infinitive niet zo is (infinitive kan je vaak vertalen met 'om te')

 

Met de gerund zou Bill dit dus vaker doen, maar dan verwacht je wel een marker zoals 'again'.

'I won't work at the weekend,' Paul said.

Paul refused ____

Verb + infinitive 

'You haven't done a good job!' she said to him.

Verb + preposition + -ing form

'You've got the job. Well done!' she said to me.

Verb + object + preposition + -ing form

'I'm sorry I arrived late for the meeting,' Harry said.

Verb + (that) + reported sentence

Waarom niet will?

Nope, omdat je altijd 1 tijd terug gaat in de tijd bij reported speech. De tekst is immers in het verleden genoemd.

 

"Normally, the tense in reported speech is one tense back in time from the tense in direct speech"

 

Uitzondering hierop is als het ww niet verder in de tijd kan. Dus een zin met 'would', kan niet meer verleden tijd worden.

Passive reporting structures

We use this to put the emphasis on the information instead of the agent or the "source".
