Je gebruikt de past continuous dus alleen als je kunt zeggen dat je iets aan het doen WAS.

The math teacher was giving a test

The principal was sitting in his office

Past Continuous 

De Past Continuous  gebruik je:

• als iets in de verleden een tijd aan de gang WAS. 
• op een bepaald moment door een andere handeling werd onderbroken;

Voorbeeld: I was screaming WHEN he hit the brakes.(trapte op de rem)

•  als twee handelingen tegelijk aan de gang zijn. 

Je maakt deze door was/were + ww+ ing

Voorbeeld: WHILE I was watching TV, I was also preparing my lunch. 

Past Continuous

De hond was aan het luisteren.

The dog was listening.

Wanneer gebruik je de past continuous?

1. als iets aan de gang is
2. als iets gisteren is gebeurd

4. als je wil zeggen wat je doet

Wanneer?

zekerheid, noodzaak of verplichting

wanneer iets moet van iemand anders / een regel of wet.

Voorbeelden

The soup has to be stirred continiously to prevent burning.(noodzaak)

They have to wear a school uniform. (verplichting , wet)

They have to be home at eight o'clock. (verplichting)

Hoe?

don't have to/ doesn't have to + hele werkwoord

Wanneer?

Het betekent dan 'niet hoeven'.

Je geeft aan dat er geen verplichting is. 

(het hoeft niet persé) 

Voorbeelden

You don't have to wear a tie with your suit.

She doesn't have to walk her dog.

I don't have to do the dishes.

could  betekent:  zou kunnen,  kon 

couldn't betekent:    zou niet kunnen, kon niet

Je gebruikt could om te zeggen dat iets

KON  (verleden tijd).  

She could scream louder than anyone else. 

Je gebruikt could ook bij een beleefde vraag. 

Could I have a sandwich, please? 

 Couldn't

Je gebruikt couldn't (gemaakt door could en not) om te zeggen dat iets NIET kon (verleden tijd)   

She couldn't see the lions 

Ze kon de leeuwen niet zien

Wat betekent 'couldn't' in deze zin?:
Jimmy couldn't score in his last match.

Wat betekent 'could' in deze zin?:
He could try harder next time.
