Learning objective

After today's lesson you:

Will be able to use the past perfect tense correctly and will have improved your use of English

Past perfect simple

- had + verb-ed (or irregular verb)

- iets dat gebeurde voor iets anders in de past simple

- tijdindicatie: before, after, when, etc. 

- na bijwoorden already, just, never

- is afgesloten, is al gebeurd

Past perfect continuous

- had been + verb-ing 

- iets dat gebeurde voor iets anders in de past simple, als het gaat om:

•        de lengte van een gebeurtenis; all day, for three months, one week before

- iets dat doorgaat of door is gegaan

Past perfect simple

- When he got to the station, his train had left. 

(when he got to the station, his train left) 

- I found her phone, after she had left. 

- He had already left when she arrived. 

Past perfect continuous

- James started waiting at 9am. I arrived at 11am. When I arrived, James had been waiting for two hours.

- I had been working at the company for three years when I got the promotion. 

- Katie had been walking four miles before she broke her ankle.

Peter was Sally's best friend,
she had known him all her life.
