There are a few factors that determine the location or site of a settlement:

1.  Acces to water
2. Land quality 
3. Defence
4. Aspect/Shelter
5. Natural resources 
6. Attractiveness of the area 
7. Function 

What makes a good location of a settlement?

There is a difference between the site and the situation of a settlement: 

• Site = the specific location of the settlement

• Situation = the position of the settlemen relative to nearby physical and human features. 

Read p. 81. Write down for each factor (there are 7 in total) why you think this factor is still relevant today or not.

Read p. 81. Hundreds of of years ago, some factors were more important than nowadays. Why might the factors influencing the choice of location for a settlement change over time?
