past habits	We used to go to California every year when I was a kid.
past states	I used to live in San Francisco for a while.

Used to is always followed by the infinitive.

In negatives and questions, we use 

did / didn't + use to

expressions of frequency	She used to eat pizza every Saturday.
adverbs of frequency	They always used to go the seaside whenever they could.

The adverb of frequency comes before used to.

would

frequency adverbs	I 'd always to my homework at the last minute when I was in school.
Talking about the past	When I first moved to San Fransisco, I used to go out a lot. I 'd visit museums and go to concerts. I 'd go out for dinner with friends.

The adverb always comes after would. 

When you talk about the past, you can start with used to and then continue with would.

We can use the past simple to talk about past states or habits. 

The main difference is that the ps doesn't emphasise the repeated actions / situation. Also, the ps doesn't make it so clear that the thing is no longer true.
