past states
I used to live in San Francisco for a while.
Used to is always followed by the infinitive.
In negatives and questions, we use 
did / didn't + use to

We can use the past simple to talk about past states or habits. 
The main difference is that the ps doesn't emphasise the repeated actions / situation. Also, the ps doesn't make it so clear that the thing is no longer true.
