Salts
Paragraph 3.4

Slide 1 - Diapositive

Learning goals
At the end of the lesson you can:
  • state the properties of salts.
  • derive the chemical formula of a salt from the name.

Slide 2 - Diapositive

Properties of salt
  • Consist of metal and non-metal atoms
  • Conduct electricity in the liquid state and when dissolved in water
  • They are brittle in the solid state
  • Their melting points are high

Slide 3 - Diapositive

Determine empirical formula:
  1. Write down the name of the salt
  2. Write down the ions with charge
  3. Determine the ratio, the total charge has to be zero
  4. Write down the emperical formula of the salt without charges

Example:
  1. magnesiumchloride
  2.       Mg2+       Cl
  3.          1       :        2     (1x2+) + (2x1-) = 0
  4. Mg Cl 2
