The test

The test will be in debate form in which the proposing team and opposition will attempt to reach a compromise.

Each participant will receive an individual mark for:

• Content

• Strategy

• Presentation

• Use of debating terms

• Fluency

• Pronunciation

You will be encouraged to take part in the preparatory debates. Your teacher will plus (+) students who take an active part and minus (-) students who avoid participation

The debate will follow this pattern:

SPEAKER 1 DEFENCE SPEECH [1 MIN] One member of the proposing committee presents the resolution to the other delegates, explaining why the committee chose the solutions and to convince the other groups of how the ideas provided are beneficial. (opposition takes notes)

SPEAKER 2. ATTACK SPEECH [1 MIN] One member of one of the other committees has the chance to speak against the solutions of the proposing committee and make new suggestions to improve them. This should always be made in a constructive and polite manner. (opposition takes notes)

SPEAKER 3: (1 min) A member of the proposing committee responds to some of the points raised in the attack speech. (opposition takes notes)

ALL Members OPEN DEBATE [max 10 MINS in total]: During the Open Debate, all members ask the other side questions about a possible resolution as well as provide input on a possible resolution.

Pause: 5 minutes to prepare the points summarise debate

SPEAKER 4 SUMMARY Defense [3 MINS]: Standing in front of the delegates, one member of the proposal team summarises the points that have been discussed (including addressing their own arguments, supporting evidence, and rebuttals). He/she re-emphasises the main solutions and their benefits in a final attempt to convince the other delegates to vote for their idea.

SPEAKER 5 SUM UP SPEECH Attack [3 MINS] Standing in front of the delegates, one member of the opposition team summarises what has been discussed (dealing with arguments, counterarguments, and supporting evidence). He/she criticises the main solutions of the other team and explains why they would not work in a final attempt to convince the other delegates to vote against the idea. They also re-state their alternative ideas.

Practicing language usage

We cannot emphasise enough the use of language:

• Correct use of idiom (build on your Quizlet corpus)
• Correct pronunciation, intonation, articulation
