- You know why the world population is growing more than ever.

- You know what the terms population distribution and population density mean.

Slide 1 - Diapositive

Population distribution
Population distribution: The pattern of where people live in an area.

Densely populated: Many people live close to each other in these places.
Sparsely populated: Few people live in these places.

Population density: The number of people per km2

The population of the Netherlands is  17 million
Half of the Dutch population live in the Randstad
Less people live in China compared with the Netherlands if you consider the size of the country's and inhabitants.

Slide 4 - Question de remorquage

Population density is ...

B
highest ... square kilometre
C

Slide 5 - Quiz

What is the description of population density?
A
The number of people living per square kilomtre
B
The number of people living in a country
C
The average number of people living in a place, per square kilometre
D
The number of people living per square kilometre, on average

Slide 6 - Quiz

Slide 10 - Diapositive

  • What does the map say about population density?
  • What does it say about population distribution?

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Population growth #1
Natural population growth
Number of births
Number of deaths
Natural increase: The difference between births and
deaths, given as a percentage.

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Population growth #2
Immigration - emigration = migration rate
Net migration: The difference between the number of
immigrants and emigrants.

Slide 13 - Diapositive

Slide 14 - Vidéo

Why does the population grow this fast?
A
Better agriculture
B
Better medicine
C
More space
D
More diseases.

Slide 16 - Question de remorquage

Population distribution
The way people are spread out over a given area is called: 'population distribution'

Can you explain the population distribution that you can see on the map?

Slide 17 - Diapositive

Population density
The population density is the average number of people living in a given area.

Can you explain the difference in population density that you can see on the map?

Slide 18 - Diapositive

Population density
Always calculate the population density using a square kilometre (km2)

How to calculate?:
Number of people / square kilometres in an area.

Slide 19 - Diapositive

Can you explain the difference in population density that you can see on the map?

Slide 22 - Diapositive

Population growth
There is a difference between family size around the world.

Usually families in poor countries are larger than families in rich countries.

Slide 23 - Diapositive

Slide 24 - Vidéo

What are we going to do?
- Repeat previous terms we've discussed.
- Take a look at population graphs
- Why do poor countries have larger families.

Learning goals:
You know and understand what population graphs are.

You know how to read the population graphs.

- You understand why there are larger families in poor countries.

Slide 26 - Diapositive

Population growth
There is a difference between family size around the world.

Usually families in poor countries are larger than families in rich countries.

Slide 27 - Diapositive

Why is there a difference?
In a poor country:
- You will have a higher status if you have many children.
- Children can earn money for their parents, even when they are old.
- People use fewer means to prevent having children.
- Many children die at a young age.

Slide 28 - Diapositive

Population graph
It is possible to see the kind of population a country has, by using a population graph.

Slide 29 - Diapositive

The Netherlands
Malawi

Slide 30 - Diapositive

Population graph
These graphs can tell us alot about the population and the future of a country.

But how?

Slide 31 - Diapositive

High population density
1.
2.
Low population density
1.
2.
Low relief
Lot of precipitation
High relief
Dry and cold

Slide 33 - Vidéo

Migration
In the case of Salim he moved from the north of India to Mumbai. He went to live in another place. We call this migration

Slide 34 - Diapositive

Migration
When someone, like Salim, moves inside the same country we call this
internal-migration

Slide 35 - Diapositive

Emigration
Some people leave the country to move to antoher country, we call this international-migration.

Slide 36 - Diapositive

Emigration
When you leave a country we call it emigration. When someone come and live permanently in a foreign country we call is immigration.

Slide 37 - Diapositive

Terms
What is the difference between immigration and emigration
Explain the term internal-migration.
Give and example of migration.

Slide 39 - Diapositive

Reasons to move
People have reasons to move.
Push: reasons to leave a place.

Pull: Reasons to go to a place.

Slide 40 - Diapositive

Economic reasons
