Past simple: when do we use it, how can we recognise a verb in the past simple?

Past Simple - Regular Verbs
After a regular verb you put '-ed'

I walk -> I walked
He walks -> He walked
They walk -> They walked

It started and ended in the past - finished action.

Past Simple - Regular verbs

Spelling:
A verb ending on a consonant + -y, ---> -ied:

  • I carry - I carried

No change with a vowel + -y :

  • I play - I played

When a verb ends with an -e, then just + -d 

  • I live - I lived

Final consonant is doubled when it ends with consonant, vowel + consonant:

  • I drop - I dropped

WAS/WERE + WERKWOORD + -ING

Gebruik: een actie die begon in het verleden was en een tijdje bezig was voordat het stopte in het verleden.

It was raining.
We were singing.

Past Continuous = al aan de gang ( lang)
Past Simple = iets gebeurde (kort) 
Past simple negative = didn't + verb

When - is often followed by the past simple.
E.g. When I came home, the door was standing wide open.

While is often followed by the past continuous
E.g. While I was travelling around Europe I visited many different cities.
