Past simple vs past continuous

To remember when we use each tense.

How to form each tense. 

Use the two tenses together in a sentence. 

Past simple: when do we use it, how can we recognise a verb in the past simple?

Past Simple - Regular Verbs

After a regular verb you put '-ed'

I walk -> I walked

He walks -> He walked

They walk -> They walked

It started and ended in the past - finished action.

Past Simple - Regular verbs

Spelling:
A verb ending on a consonant + -y, ---> -ied:

• I carry - I carried

No change with a vowel + -y :

• I play - I played

When a verb ends with an -e, then just + -d 

• I live - I lived

Final consonant is doubled when it ends with consonant, vowel + consonant:

• I drop - I dropped

Past continous: What parts make the past continuous? When do we use it?

Past continuous

WAS/WERE + WERKWOORD + -ING

Gebruik: een actie die begon in het verleden was en een tijdje bezig was voordat het stopte in het verleden.

It was raining.

We were singing.

It was raining.

We were singing.

Je maakt de past continuous door was of were voor het werkwoord te zetten en –ing er achter

I wasn't sleeping

You were living

He/she/it was swimming

We weren't going

You were doing

They were having

Used together

Past simple - geef aan de korte actie

Past continuous - geef aan de lange actie van de twee

I was walking the dog when I saw my neighbour.

Heel vaak onderbreekt de "past simple" de "past continuous" actie.

Past Continous en Past Simple

Past Continuous = al aan de gang ( lang)

Past Simple = iets gebeurde (kort) 

Past simple negative = didn't + verb

Past simple vs Past continuous

When - is often followed by the past simple.

E.g. When I came home, the door was standing wide open.

While is often followed by the past continuous

E.g. While I was travelling around Europe I visited many different cities. 

When her dad ....... (come) in, Jaimy ........ (eat) crisps.

2. came / was eating

Pamela ........ (read) a book when her mother .......... (arrive).

2. read / was arriving

Past simple vs. Past continuous:

I ______ (fall) asleep, while I ________ (watch) TV.

1. fell - watched
2. was falling - was watching
3. was falling - watched
4. fell - was watching

Past Simple or Past Continuous
The internet ___ (not exist) in 1980. (missing words only, no contractions)
