2. If I studied hard, I would pass the exam.

3. If I had studied hard, I would have passed the exam

Condition (voorwaarde) = if
Result (resultaat) = in de hoofdzin

present simple - will + infinitive (hele ww)
2. If I studied hard, I would pass the exam.
past simple - would + infinitive

past perfect -  would + have + voltooid dw.

From zero to three: 

it becomes less likely that it will ever happen.

We use the third conditional to talk about something in the past that did not happen.

3. If I had studied hard, I would have passed the exam

Als ik hard gestudeerd zou hebben, zou ik het examen gehaald hebben. 

if + past perfect (had + voltooid deelwoord)
hoofdzin: would + have + voltooid deelwoord

Indirect speech
direct speech:
Johnny says, 'I am working late tonight'. 

'I will give him a lift to the station tomorrow,' Tanya says. 

Transpose these sentences to indirect speech. Bear in mind that it is at least a couple of days later

Indirect speech: (it is a couple of days later)

Johnny said (that) he was working that night

Tanya said (that) she would give him a lift to the station the next day/the day after/the following day.

So what happens?
  • tense is further back 
  • pronouns often  change 
  • references to time and place often change

At the oral exam/test:

  • Your group will have 12-15 minutes (4-5 per person)
  • You will get individual marks for 3 aspects:
1. pronunciation (Am/Br) & fluency
2. correct use of English
3. conversation skills (= how well you react to your groupmates and how well you can involve them in the conversation)

  • De uitspraak is duidelijk te verstaan ook al is soms een duidelijk buitenlands accent te horen en worden er incidenteel uitspraakfouten gemaakt (B1)
  • Communiceert redelijk nauwkeurig in vertrouwde omstandigheden; vertoont over het algemeen een goede grammaticale beheersing maar met merkbare invloed vanuit de moedertaal. Fouten komen voor, maar het is altijd duidelijk wat hij of zij probeert uit te drukken (B1+)
  • Kan een eenvoudig rechtstreeks gesprek beginnen, gaande houden en besluiten over onderwerpen die vertrouwd of van persoonlijk belang zijn Kan gedeeltelijk herhalen wat iemand anders heeft gezegd om wederzijds begrip te bevestigen (B1)

Some tips
  • Form a group with people you feel comfortable with
  • Find a specific topic that is more or less within your range of interest
  • Know how to conduct a conversation (asking others questions is also part of one)

  • If you do not or cannot come up with a word: describe it. If all else fails, use signs. If desperate: use Dutch and go on!
  • Useful sentences: Can you explain, specify, elaborate?/From my point of view I would say that ....

  • 12/10: Test on GRO chapter 4 & 5 and vocab & keywords Alquin texts 3  and 4 (5%) 
  • 14/10: Prepare for oral test
  • 15/10: Writing skills & prepare for oral test
