Promise me you won't / can't sing 'Happy Birthday'.

Practise: modals in the past

You need to write a short story in the past tense for the test on Unit 7 and 8

You must be able to use the grammar you learned in the story

Now you will practise using modals in the past

Examples

The thief must have had a key. The door was locked and nothing was broken.

I thought I saw Adnan this morning but it couldn't have been him – 

he's in Greece this week.

Police think the suspect may have left the country using a fake passport.

Write a sentence in the past using: would have OR could have

The teacher could have given everyone a high five, but social distancing stopped her. 

Write a sentence in the past using: might have OR should have

The students should have read the book, if they wanted to pass the test.
