Cause of the journeys of discovery

  • To trade goods and gain wealth
such as: silk, perfume, gemstones and spices
  • To find different routes
because: landroutes were dangerous and expensive

Portuguese to Asia
  • The Portuguese sailed along the coast of Africa
  • They established trading posts such as Elmina in Ghana
  • These new trade routes and permanent European trading posts marked the start of the European Expension
  • With these new routes they came upon new competitors, cultures and religions

Spaniards to America
  • Columbus sailed from the Canary Islands to the west in 1492
  • Columbus thought he had reached the Indies but by accident discovered Amerika
  • Spain and Portugal divided the world trade:
    Spain would focus on Amerika and Portugal on Africa and Asia

More Europeans to Southeast Asia
  • The Dutch tried to evade Portugal by finding their own alternative trade routes (such as going around the top of Russia) but this failed
  • Like many other European nations the Dutch also went around Africa to trade with Asia and founded trading posts in Indonesia (late 16th century)
