When it's important when something happened in the past

Often with words like:  yesterday, this morning, last month, before -> things that clearly indicate a past time

We went to Spain last month.

She played a lot of tennis when she was younger.

When something was going on at a specific time during the past

I was watching a movie when the phone rang

Why were they late for class?

Because they were playing a game until 9:18.

Past continuous 

was/were + ing-form of a verb

was playing

were working

Past simple vs past continuous 

We use the past simple when it's important when something happened in a past time.

We use the past continuous when talking about something that was going on at that time in the past or what you were doing

Compare

At 4pm last Tuesday, I was working in the office (I was still working, so past continuous, action not completed)

At 4pm last Monday, I finished work early and went home (I had finished working, action has been completed)

It rained yesterday. (clear indication of past time)

It was raining when I walked the dog (talking about what I was doing in the past)

Examples

We used to go on vacation a lot when I was younger

Long ago, they used to force children to work in factories

In questions

When used in questions, we use did and get rid of the 'd'

Did you really use to work as a clown?

Did you use to live in Iceland?

Negation (ontkenning)

With negation we use didn't use to + verb

Our cat didn't use to be so mean, but now she scratches us all the time.

I didn't even use to like vegetables, but now I'm a vegetarian
