Exploring the Present Continuous

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to understand and use the present continuous tense correctly.

What do you already know about the present continuous tense?

Definition

The present continuous tense is 

used to describe actions happening at the moment of speaking 

: akties die op dit moment aan de gang zijn

Form

The present continuous tense is formed: (hoe ziet het eruit)

 using the present tense of the verb 

'to be' (am, is, are) 

+ 

the present participle form of the main verb.

(voltooid deelwoord)

Usage

We use the present continuous tense for:

 actions happening right now.

 For example: 'I am eating dinner.'

Usage 2

We use the present continuous tense for 

temporary actions happening around the current time.

 For example: 'She is studying for her exam this week.'

Usage 3

We use the present continuous tense for future arrangements. For example: 'They are going to the concert tomorrow.'

Negative Form

To create the negative form of the present continuous tense, add 'not' after the verb 'to be'. 

For example: 'I am not running in the race.'

Question Form

To create a question in the present continuous tense,

start with the verb 'to be'. 

For example: 'Are you coming to the party?'
