Can - alleen bij de present simple

Could - soms als verleden tijd van can.

To be allowed to - mogelijk met alle werkwoordstijden

Dad says I can stay until 11 p.m. - Pap zegt dat ik tot 11 uur mag blijven.

Dad said I could stay until 11 p.m. - Pap zei dat ik tot 11 uur mocht blijven.

Will you be allowed to stay until 11 p.m.? - Mag jij tot 11 uur blijven?

Beleefde vraag

Can - Can I have a glass of water, please?

Mag ik (alsjeblieft) een glas water?

Could - Could I have a glass of water, please?

Zou ik (alstublieft) een glas water mogen?

Could is beleefder  dan can.
