Content

Gamification, also known as playful learning, stimulates behavior through the intrinsic motivation of the students. Here, we will explain the following:

  • What is gamification and why do I use it?

Example interactive formats in LessonUp:
  • Trivial Pursuit - Hotspots and spinner
  • Game of the Goose - Hotspots, images, and spinner
  • Memory - Drag and drop question
  • Word Search - Drag and drop question
  • Domino - Drag and drop question
  • Knight's Move - Drag and drop question

Check out our channel folder Gamification.

Gamification
Gamification is the use of game thinking, game techniques, and game elements in a non-game environment. The goal is to change behavior, create engagement, and transfer knowledge in a playful manner.
What?
Gamification is used to motivate and engage students. Game elements spark interest and maintain attention for a longer time.
In LessonUp, there are many game formats available that you can use in your classroom, either as a whole class, individually, or in teams. In the following slides, we will show you some of these interactive formats.

Trivial Pursuit

In Trivial Pursuit your knowledge is tested. The spinner determines the question and color. Each correctly answered question earns you a "pie piece." The first one to collect all the "pie pieces" is the winner. Play in pairs.

How to create Trivial Pursuit:
1. Add a Spinner from + Components.
Add questions to the spinner by double-clicking on it.
2. Add a Hotspot from + Components.
3. Right-click on the spinner, click on Settings.
    Choose Extra: Movable during presentation.
4. Copy the Hotspot five more times and change them
to match the colors of the spinner in Settings.
5. Under + Components, you will find Symbols.
Create six circles in the same colors as the spinner.

Game of the Goose
With Game of the Goose students work independently, in pairs, or in groups of three on the topic. As they progress in the game, students receive increasingly difficult questions.

What do you need to create this game?
1. A spinner with numbers -3, -2, -1, 1, 2, and 3.
2. Movable hotspots as game pieces (pawns).
3. Fixed hotspots as designated places.
4. Questions for your fixed hotspots

Question:
Which type of weathering will occur most frequently here?
Question: Glaciers carry weathering material. Subsequently, this material, along with the glacier, erodes a valley. What shape does a glacier valley have?
Question: What is the sediment left behind on the sides, bottom, and end of the glacier called?
Question:
How can we tell that we are dealing with young mountains here?
Question: Explain how the Alps were formed? Describe this in at least three steps!

What does "firn" mean?
Question:
Classify rivers. Based on a longitudinal profile, three parts are formed. Which parts are those?
Question:
There are 3 types of rivers. Which types are there?
Question:
Do we see an erosional coast or an accretion coast here?
Question:
What does erosion mean?
Question:
In at least 3 steps, explain how what you see in the image has been formed?
Question:
Here, we see an outer and inner bend of a river. Where does sedimentation occur, inside or outside the bend?
Question:
How is a horseshoe lake formed? In this image, there is almost one visible.
Question:
What is sedimentation?
Question:
Rivers cause erosion. The power of abrasive weathering material and water is immense. Complete valleys are formed by this force. What type of valley is formed?
Question:
There are chemical weathering and mechanical weathering. Mechanical weathering is caused, among other factors, by temperature differences. Explain how temperature differences contribute to weathering.
Question:
The Alps were formed by forces within the Earth. What are these forces called?
Question:
What does old mountains look like? Provide at least 2 characteristics!
Question:
What is the reason for significant sedimentation in the lower course of the river?
Question:
Explain how a coastal dune is formed?
Question:
What is the name of the river's mouth, as seen on the right side here?
On the left side, you can see an estuary!
Gameplay
How does this game work?
  • Choose a pawn.
  • Spin the wheel and move the number of steps indicated on the wheel.
  • Follow the direction of the circles.
  • If you land on a green circle, choose one of the question marks and answer the question. Incorrect? Then skip a turn. Correct, the turn goes to the other player, but you may continue after that.
  • Lilac circle means waiting for a turn.
  • White circle, nothing happens.
  • The first player to reach one of the cups and answer correctly wins the game.

Memory

The students click, just like in memory, on two "cards" (here: hotspots). When they find the correct combination, they must be placed together in the right spot.

How do I create this drag-and-drop question?
1. Create an even number of hotspot drag components
with two answers that belong together.
2. Optionally, add images and link them to the hotspot
     under Media in Settings.
3. Create drag goals > link the hotspots to the drag goals.

How do I use this?
At the end of the lesson to apply the acquired knowledge. Divide the class into pairs.

Word Search
In this drag-and-drop question, the students must first give the term or name based on the description. The number behind the description indicates the number of letters in the word. Then, the students can move the letters around in the word search.

How do I create this drag-and-drop question myself?
Create a word search here with your own terms.
1. Add the screenshot of the word search to the left
of your drag-and-drop question as an image.
2. Add drag components to the right, the same number
as the number of letters, and the size of the letters.
3. Write a clue above the drag components.
3. Create drag goals. Drag them above the letters
and link the drag goals to the drag components.

Domino
In domino, students have to create a logical sequence where words are placed next to a short definition.

How do I create this drag-and-drop question?
1. Design the domino tiles.
2. Take a screenshot.
3. "Cut out" the domino tiles in a photo editing program.
4. Add the domino tiles as drag components.

Tip 💡: Use the following slides as a template.

Knight's Move

By using the Knight's Move, the students will look for a term or phrase related to the topic.

How do I create this drag-and-drop question?
1.Come up with an 8-letter word related to your subject.
2. Add 8 equally sized drag goals and components.
3. Arrange the letters in the right position, ensuring that the move can be applied. (The knight moves 2 squares horizontally and 1 square vertically or 2 squares vertically and 1 square horizontally.)

Tip 💡: As an additional step, you can choose to have the students explain the term and its context.

The knight's movement
In the game of chess, the knight moves in an L-shaped pattern. It can move 2 squares horizontally and 1 square vertically or 2 squares vertically and 1 square horizontally. This unique movement creates an L-shape on the chessboard whenever the knight makes a move.
Jump with your knight to create a word with 8 letters. Drag the letters to the right boxes and reveal the word. Last but not least, explain the meaning of the word.
