When to use?
When referring to:
(Short) finished actions in the past

How to form?
Affirmative sentence:
Verb + ed
OR irregular verb: 2nd row
(see SAW seen)

Negation:
didn't + verb
did not + verb

Question:
Did + subject + verb
I walked home.
Did I walk home?
I didn't walk home.
I did not walk home.
You walked home.
Did you walk home?
You didn't walk home.

Past Simple



When to use?
When you talk about more than one moment in the past, the thing that happened longest ago is written in the past perfect.


How to form?
Affirmative sentence:
had + past participle

Negation:
had + not + past participle

Question:
Had + subject + past participle
As soon as I had finished my breakfast, I went to school.
Had I finished my breakfast before leaving for school?
I hadn't finished my breakfast before leaving for school.
Before they went to the city, they had finished the game.
Had they finished the game vbefore they went to the city?
Before they went to the city, they had not finished the game.

It had not rained for months when the fire started.

When to use?
When referring to:

Something that was going on for a period of time in the past at a specific moment and is often interrupted.

How to form?
Affirmative sentence:
was / were + verb + ing

Negation:
was/were + not + verb + ing

Question sentence:
was / were + subject + verb+ing


I was studying when she called.
Was I studying when she called?
I wasn't studying when she called.
You were cleaning your room when your mom walked in.
Were you cleaning your room when your mom walked in.
You were not / weren't cleaning your room when your mom walked in.
She was studying when she called.
Was she studying when she called.
She was not studying when she called.
Example:
London was sleeping.

When to use?
When reffering to:

An action that started in the past and continued up to another point in the past.

How to form?
Affirmative sentence:
Had + been + verb+ing

Negation:
Had + not + been + verb+ing

Question:
had + subject + been + verb+ing
You had been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived.
Had you been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived?
You had not been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived.
Example:
The fire had been raging for almost four days.
