1. Actions that happened (and finished) at a specific time in the past. 

"I walked home yesterday"

Past Simple - How? (Exceptions)

If verb ends in consonant + -y, take off -y, and add -ied ---> (married)

If verb ends in vowel + -y , add -ed ---> (played)

If verb ends in vowel + consonant, add consonant + -ed ----> (stopped) 

If verb ends in -e, add only -d  ---> (lived)

Past Continuous - Keywords

Past Continuous - How?

Past tense of to be + Verb + -ing

"I was walking..."

"He was starting..."

"They were cooking..."

Past Conti. - How? (Exceptions)

If verb ends in -e, remove -e, and add -ing ---> Baking

If verb ends in -c, add -king ---> panicking

If verb ends in vowel + consonant, add consonant + -ing ---> (swapping)

Past Continuous

Shows it took time

"I was walking"

Both in same sentence

When one activity is interrupted by another:

"I was meditating until my sister sneezed"

The activity in the Past Continuous is interrupted by the activity in the Past Simple
