Past continuous
Used to talk about something that was going on in the past, but got interrupted.

She was walking, when she tripped on a branch.
They were eating, when the police came in.
 I received an email when I was working,

1. something that was already happening (to be + verb+ ing) 
2. something that interrupted the first thing. ( verb+ed)
