Past simple: 

what it looks like

Verb + ed

(to walk)

I walked

He walked 

They walked

etc.

Careful!

Not all verbs use this rule. Those are irregular verbs (onregelmatige werkwoorden)

 (to swim) > I swam

(to run) > I ran

(to buy) > I bought 

(to catch) > I caught

For these... there is no rule- you just have to know them.

when something happened in the past, and it is finished

Past continuous

Used to talk about something that was going on in the past, but got interrupted.

She was walking, when she tripped on a branch.

They were eating, when the police came in.

 I received an email when I was working,

so... there is 2 things going on.

1. something that was already happening (to be + verb+ ing) 

2. something that interrupted the first thing. ( verb+ed)

I was walking, when I tripped over a branch

I _____, when someone tapped my shoulder

1. was talking
2. talked

When she ____ in, I was talking on the phone.

1. was walking
2. walked

What's the difference?
I am walking to the office now.
I was walking when I got a phone call yesterday.

Present continuous: something that is happening at the moment

I am walking right now

Past continuous: someone was doing something in the past and it was interrupted

I was walking when I tripped
