José Arcadio Aureliano who???
To make things a little less confusing, I will indicate the generation people belong to with I, II and III in between brackets. Generation I is José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguaran, generation II are their sons and (adopted) daughters and generation III are their grandchildren. Note also that the only one for whom the author uses the last name (Buendía) is the first José Arcadio. His son may have the exact same name but is never named by first and last name

A lot of tragedy happens in these chapters. The following people die: José Arcadio Buendía (I), José Arcadio (II), Colonel Aureliano Buendía (II) and Aureliano José (III). Whose death do you believe to be most tragic and why?

Slide 8 - Question ouverte

Amaranta is a specifically tragic and solitary figure in this novel, especially when it comes to romance. After chapter 9, she has had no less than 3 men interested in her and all ended tragically. Name all three and briefly summarise the "love stories".

Slide 9 - Question ouverte

War is confusing
Since so many of you were kind of confused by the war, some basics:
  • There is political unrest between two parties: the liberals and the conservatives.
  • Before the outside world came in, the leadership of Macondo didn't realy have a "party" but they were quite relaxed and therefore "liberal"
  • The conservatives were the leading party in Colombia at the time and they kind of invaded Macondo once Macondo became connected to the outside world.

Slide 10 - Diapositive

War is confusing pt 2
  • The start of this conservative invasion is with the installment of Don Apolinar Moscote (yknow, Remedios' dad) as mayor of Macondo in ch.3
  • Important to remember: Liberal soldiers (like our dude Colonel Aureliano Buendía) are minority rebels. The national government is conservative
  • In chapter 5, Aureliano is fed up by the lies and corruption of the conservative leadership (under magistrate/mayor Moscote, see first bullet point) and he leads a Liberal rebellion against him, claiming back Macondo. After that, he becomes the leader of the Liberal army and goes to war as such.

Slide 11 - Diapositive

War is confusing pt 3
  • In chapter 7 we learn that the Civil War was lost by the Liberals and that is why our dude Colonel Aureliano and his friend Colonel Gerineldo Márquez are supposed to be executed (but their asses are saved by José Arcadio)
  • Colonel Aureliano goes rogue, leading a ridiculous number of uprisings (32 lol, just give up already) and the official Liberal Party abandons him. This means that he is too liberal for the liberals and is now an independent rebellion soldier rather than an official member of the liberal party
  • His son Aureliano José also joins the rebel army (now no longer associated with the Liberal Party) when he is rejected by his aunt (yay, incest!) but deserts/leaves the army because he still wants to get with his aunt (lol)  but is shot by a conservative soldier

Slide 12 - Diapositive

War is confusing pt 4
  • The official Liberal Party (that Colonel Aureliano used to be part of but was kicked out of) signs a peace agreement with the conservatives. The liberal party is now in the process of earning a place in congress (as the opposition party) so they are about to co-govern the country. Colonel thinks that's BS and gets pissed
  • Colonel Aureliano becomes leader of a rebel army but also bff's with the new mayor of Macondo (José Raquel Moncada) who is a conservative and was put in charge of Macondo after the peace agreements.
  • They are great friends and even consider merging their parties and leading Macondo together, away from national political and military influences. This of course does not work since their ideologies are opposes

Slide 13 - Diapositive

War is confusing pt 5
Despite the unlikely friendship between Colonel  Buendiá and José Raquél Moncada, this comes to a nasty end. Buendiá returns to Macondo shortly after his son was killed by a conservative soldier. He has managed to capture two towns and comes back to Macondo to capture the town too. A war court decides that all conservative soldiers involved be shot, including José Raquél Moncada. Everyone begs Buendía not to do it since the town has never been ruled better than under Moncada, but He does it anyway and Moncada dies. All conservative laws are replaced by liberal ones and Buendía and his rebel army now lead Macondo.

Slide 14 - Diapositive

War is confusing pt 6
  • Colonel Marquez and Colonel Buendía both start to lose faith in war. They used to fight for their ideology but have become inrecognisably violent (especially Buendía) and are now just fighting because they are fighting. But for what goal?
  • Marquez tries to get with Amaranta in hopes of forgetting about the war (that girl is popular!!) but she once again isn't into it.
  • Buendia has become a lonely, quiet and emotionless man, nothing like the idealist he used to be. Sad :(

Slide 15 - Diapositive

War is confusing pt 7
  • Colonel Buendía is increasingly disgusted by how violent and brutal peope are in this war. He also has no emotions and no memories, he is desensitized
  • Colonel Buendía signs a peace treaty with the Liberal Party because he is just super done.
  • Colonel Marquez is sentenced to death for high treason and that's when Buendía kind of snaps out of it and releases him. He decides to return home at some point because he no longer cares about the whole rebellion thing.

Slide 16 - Diapositive

War is confusing pt 8
  • Finally, at the end of chapter 9, Buendía surrenders. He immediately tries to kill himself afterwards but manages to miss any vital organs with his gun and survives.
  • He is still kind of pissed because the liberal party won't even pay a pension to war veterans (both conservative and liberal). He tries to go back to war but there's guards from the liberal party everywhere so he can't really leave the house.
  • This is the end of the war. All parties (conservative government party, liberal party, rebels) have signed a peace treaty.

Slide 17 - Diapositive

War is confusing pt 9
  • So, most important to know
  • There were three parties: the conservative party (government), the liberal party (opposition), the rebels (kicked out of liberal party after they were "too soft".
  • The majority party in government is the Conservative Party. They used to be the only one but the Liberal party later sort of joins them.
  • Colonel used to be part of the Liberal party but became a rebel army leader
  • The rebels had to surrender to the government

Slide 18 - Diapositive
