Introduction to Present Perfect

Present Perfect

We form the present perfect like this:

Form

I´ve = I have

She´s = She has

Person + Have + Past participle (3rd form)

Negative

Haven´t = have not

Negative
I haven´t finished	we haven´t finished

he/she/it hasn´t finished	they haven´t finished

Questions

Interrogative
Have I finished...?	Have we finished...?

Short answer: Yes, I have or no I haven´t 

We form the present perfect with the auxilliary verb have, followed by the past participle.

Regular verbs: Verb + ed

I have traveled to Scotland by train before.

Irregular verbs: 3rd form

I have seen Avengers: End Game twice.

Use 1

We use the present perfect to talk about recent events:

Pete has passed all his exams.

Use 2

We also use it to talk about experiences.

I´ve eaten snails in France.

Use 3

We also use present perfect to talk about an event that started in the past and is still going on in the present. Let op: dit kan heel moeilijk zijn voor Nederlands sprekers!

My dad has worked for IBM for ten years. (for is used with a period of time.)

I´ve had this computer since May. (Since is used for a point in time)

An extra tip

We use both been and gone as the past participles of the verb go. We use been when someone has returned, and gone for when they haven´t returned.

Angelo has been shopping. (He is back now.)

Angelo has gone shopping. (He is still at the shops.)

One more tip

We use how long and the present perfect to ask how long a situation has continued up to the present.
