• We also use the past continuous to express activites that started at some time in the past and are possibly still in progress after a time in the past.
"When I woke up this morning, the sun was shining".

  1. The Past Simple expresses completed past actions. The Past Continuous expresses activities in progress: I washed my hair last night. / I was washing my hair last night when the phone rang. 

2. A Past simple activity can interupt a Past Continuous activity: When I phoned Daan, he was having a shower.
