How we talk about the past?

Slide 1 - Diapositive

Repeating the Past Simple
After a regular verb you put '-ed'.

An irregular verb =  onregelmatig! Dus leren.

Slide 2 - Diapositive

Past Simple - Regular verbs

Spelling:
Als een werkwoord eindigt op een medeklinker + -y, dan verandert de -y in -ie:

  • I carry - I carried

Let op, er verandert niets als het werkwoord eindigt op klinker + -y:

  • I play - I played

Als een werkwoord eindigt op -e, dan komt er in de past simple alleen een -d achter:

  • I live - I lived

In de past simple wordt de laatste medeklinker verdubbeld als er één klinker voor staat:

  • I drop - I dropped

Slide 3 - Diapositive

The form for the past simple is the same for all
(so NO shit-rule)
I   arrived yesterday
She/he/it  arrived yesterday
You arrived yesterday
We arrived yesterday
They arrived yesterday
What about the negative = ontkenning?

Slide 4 - Diapositive

Past Simple - Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs in the past tense  have their own form.
To write -> wrote;          I wrote her a letter last week.
to go       -> went;           He went to Italy last year.
to make -> made:         They made a very nice meal two days ago.
to do -> did
to be ->
Can you point out the clues (for using Past Tense) above?

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Negative past = ontkenning in de verleden tijd
                  not          (iets niet doen)
The negative is formed with did not + hele werkwoord.    Ook bij irregular.
I arrived yesterday.(= positive)              I brought a present. (= positive)
I didn't arrive yesterday .                           I didn't bring a present.
She/he/it didn't arrive yesterday.         He didn't bring a present.
You didn't arrive yesterday .                   You .......... a present. (to bring)
We didn't arrive yesterday.                     We .......... a surprise.  (to do)
They didn't arrive yesterday .                 They   ..........    at the party. (to be)
