Past perfect

- Completed in the past, before something else happened

= Had + past participle

(ed/3e rij)

- When he had finished studying, he went home

 (alle twee al afgerond).

Past perfect continuous

- Completed in the past, took some time. Focus on duration.

= Had + been + present participle

(+ing)

- He had been studying English for six years, after he had finished his thesis he moved to Portugal to teach. 

(wel zes jaar lang, nu niet meer).

Past simple

- short actions in the past

- stam + ed

- Irregular verbs (2nd row)

- Signaalwoorden: yesterday, last year, last week.

I walked to school everyday for four years.

You didn't walk to school everyday for four years.

Did she walk to school everyday for four years?

Past continuous

- Past tense, takes some time

- Past before the past

- Was/were +ing

- Signaalwoorden: while, when.

I was walking to school when I heard someone scream.

You weren't walking to school when you heard someone scream.

Was she walking to school when she heard someone scream?
