The First Conditional

• Als iets waarschijnlijk gaat gebeuren, nu of in de toekomst
• Als er een voorwaarde is die waarschijnlijk uitkomt
• will + werkwoord ... if + present simple

• If he gets the day off, we will go to London
• We will be sad if Daniel leaves

Second Conditional

Why do we use the second conditional?

First, we can use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true. With a dream, for example.

Second, we can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because it's not true. 

 - If I had his number, I would call him. (I don't have his number now, so it's impossible for me to call him).

LET OP: In deze conditonal gebruik je bij 'be' altijd WERE

 - If I were you, I wouldn't go out with that man.

Je maakt de first conditional met:

1. 'if' + present simple + will/won't + hele werkwoord
2. 'if' + past simple + would/wouldn't + hele werkwoord
3. 'if' + present simple + past simple
4. 'if' + past simple + present simple

Choose the First Conditional

1. She'll miss the bus if she doesn't leave soon.
2. When water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.
3. If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello.
4. She would travel all over the world if she were rich.

Second conditional gebruik je bij...

1. Feiten, algemene informatie en waarheden
2. Mogelijke en waarschijnlijke situaties
3. Onmogelijke situaties in het nu en onwaarschijnlijk in de toekomst
4. Situaties vonden niet plaats, zijn hypothetisch

Je maakt de second conditional met:
('onwaarschijnlijk')

1. 'if' + present simple / will/won't + hele werkwoord
2. 'if' + past simple / would/wouldn't + hele werkwoord
3. 'if' + present simple / past simple
4. 'if' + past simple / present simple

Second conditional

if + past simple,... would + infinitive

Example sentence and exercises

-  If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.(I probably won't win the lottery)
