Past Simple
Form: 
  • regular = verb + ED
  • irregular =  2nd form
  • Q = Did + verb/hele ww/1st form
  • - = Didn't + verb/hele ww/1st form
  • I used to/didn't use to + verb -> habits/situations in the past
  • I would + verb -> only habits in the past

Signal words: 
when/then/ago/last/in 1990/ this morning etc.

Use:  
  • To talk about an action finished in the past - when is mentioned

  • To talk about several actions finished in the past.
Present Perfect
Form: 
  • has (he/she/it) + verb + ED/3rd form
  • have (I/you/we/they) + verb = ED/3rd form
  • Q = Has/have + verb+ED/3rd form (Has she been there yet?)
  • - = hasn't/haven't + verb+ED/3rd form

Signal words:
so far, since, how long, up till now, already, yet, never, ever, always, just, for

Use:
  • To talk about sth. that started in the past and is still going on
  • To talk about an action that has recently finished - when isn't mentioned
  • To emphasize result / when isn't mentioned
  • To ask about experience (have you ever....?)
