Revise reported speech

Reported Speech

You report on what someone else has said before in direct speech.  You use backshifting to change the tense of the reported sentence and make some changes to time phrases and pronouns.

Lisa: "I am sending a text to Gabriel, he is late today."

May:  Lisa said that she was sending a text to Gabriel because he was late that day.

Reporting verbs

There are many other verbs that can be used instead of "said". These reporting verbs have different structures, so be aware of how you use them. 

The full list is on page 168 of your OA book.

You have to know these reporting verbs and how to use them for your test. Make sure you study them. 

Tyler: "Ian hasn't invited any girls to his party."
Tyler told me (that) .............

1. Ian hasn't invited any girls to his party.
2. Ian hadn't invited any girls to his party.

Het is een algemene waarheid.

Robert: "Dennis often downloaded the latest tunes."
Robert added (that) .......

1. Dennis had often downloaded the latest tunes
2. Dennis often downloaded the latest tunes

Lily: "Mr Jones has always been rude to Samantha."
Lily thinks (that) ......

1. Mr Jones has always been rude to Samantha
2. Mr Jones had always been rude to Samantha

James and David: "We are going to leave now."
James and David told me (that) .....

Abby "What have you decided to do?"
Abby asked me .....

Elisabeth: "Did you watch the latest film?"
Elisabeth asked me .....

Frank: "How much pocket money does Lisa get?"
Frank wanted to know.....

'Sally went home early.'
He told me ......

'We're going to London next week.'
She said.......

'I'll pay you back tomorrow, I promise.'
He ......... (Use a special reporting verb, not say or tell.)

'If I were you I would go home immediately.'
He ...... (Use a special reporting verb, not say or tell.)
