Modal verbs - you know when to use...

should - must - have to

should

I shouldn't have eaten that lego block!
SHOULD =  advies aan iemand geven

• Iets wat je zou moeten doen
• Iets wat je niet zou moeten doen

SHOULD= Je zegt dat het goed is om iets wel of niet te doen, maar het is niet verplicht

should

Should = advies

You should stop eating fast food

 if you want to stay healthy. 

Een modal verandert meestal niet van vorm...

I	should	stop	eating fast food.
You	should	stop	eating fast food.
He/She/It	should	stop	eating fast food.
We	should	stop	eating fast food.
They	should	stop	eating fast food.

must

You must not step on a landmine!

MUST (NOT) = Wanneer de spreker zelf vindt dat een actie gedaan moet worden. Jij vindt dat iets (NIET) MOET

Je gebruikt must ook om iemand sterk aan te raden iets te doen als het niet verplicht is

must

Must = als je zelf vindt dat het moet of als het moet maar het is niet verplicht.

I must go to bed early tonight 

if I want to be ready for the test tomorrow. 

Een modal verandert meestal niet van vorm...

I	must	go	to bed early tonight.

He/She/It	must	go	to bed early tonight.

You have to wear a seatbelt.
HAVE TO = Om te zeggen dat een actie gedaan moet worden.

Iets wat verplicht is (door iets/iemand anders: wet, regels)

have to

Have to = verplicht

All drivers have to stop 

in front of a red traffic light!

Dit is de enige modal die wel verandert:

You	have to	stop	in front of a red traffic light
He/she/it	has to	stop	in front of a red traffic light

They	have to	stop	in front of a red traffic light

Modals

Have to	Should	Must
Om te zeggen dat iets gedaan MOET worden. He/she/it: has to You have to do your homework!	Om advies te geven. Het kan gedaan worden maar het moet niet. You should see a doctor.	Wanneer de persoon die het zegt vindt dat hij/zij zelf iets moet doen. Om advies te geven (sterker dan should) I must clean my room. You must brush your teeth.
