Creating Discussion Statements
Clearly State Your Position:
Be concise and articulate in presenting your viewpoint to avoid ambiguity.

A discussion statement is not a question:
Make sure it is one declarative sentence. Don't mention your arguments to the statement.

A discussion statement is debatable:
You have to be able to be in favour or against the statement.

Use Appropriate Language:
Employ a range of vocabulary and expressions suitable for a B2/C1 level.

Provide Relevant Examples:
Support your statement with examples to enhance clarity and persuasiveness.

Examples of Good and Bad Statements
Well-Crafted Discussion Statements:

Example 1:
Due to rising health risks from air pollution, the UAE should shift to sustainable energy sources.

Example 2:
The UAE should mandate protective measures and industry reforms to reduce occupational health risks.

Examples of Good and Bad Statements
Poorly-Crafted Discussion Statements:
1. Lack of Specificity:
  •    "Air pollution in the UAE is not good."
  •    Issue: This statement is overly vague and lacks specific reference to the issues highlighted in the article, such as health risks, migrant workers, and the impact of fossil fuel production.
2. Non-Declarative Statement:
  •   "Is air pollution a problem because of fossil fuels in the UAE?"
  •    Issue: This is a question rather than a declarative statement. Effective discussion statements should assert a position for debate.

Examples of Good and Bad Statements
Poorly-Crafted Discussion Statements:
3. Absolute Assertion:

  • "Fossil fuels are the only reason for air pollution in the UAE."
  • Issue: This statement oversimplifies the issue presented in the article, neglecting the complexity of factors contributing to air pollution, such as sandstorms and government policies.
4. Lack of Debate Potential:
  • "Air pollution in the UAE is caused by many things."
  • Issue: While somewhat true, this statement lacks specificity and doesn't invite debate or exploration of the specific factors discussed in the article.
