It isn’t always easy to identify adjectives and adverbs!

Adverb

Compare:

She looked calm. 

She looked calmly across the water. 

Adjectives 

Tell you something about a noun or a personal pronoun

Multiple adjectives? see p. 281

Place: before a noun or after it when you use a linking verb like 'to be', 'to become', to seem' etc. 

Copulas 

Also called 'linking verbs' 

A = B

The boy is afraid

The house looks horrible

e.g. to be, to become, to appear, to seem etc (p. 281)

Adverbs

Tell you something about verbs, adjectives, adverbs or clauses.

Place: depending on the adverb!

How to form adverbs?

Regular forms:

adjective +ly

 happy = happily

gentle = gently

true = truly

full = fully
