Past simple and past continuous?

Difference 1.
past simple and  past continuous: 
past simple is a situation of one action in the past and it is completed.
 past continuous is action of (usually) short duration that was going on in the past.

Past simple and past perfect?

Difference 2.
Past perfect or Past Simple:
Past Simple: something happened in the past and is completed(1 step back)
Past perfect is something that also happened in the past but BEFORE something else. It is even further in the past.. (2 steps back)

past continuous: 
something (an action) of (usually) short duration in the past

was / were + verb + ing 

Sometimes something else in the past happens while this action is going on:
Tom called when I was taking a shower  (called is past simple)
