5.1 The Netherlands is resurrected

• After the war the Netherlands had to be rebuilt.  
• This period was called the ''wederopbouw'' 

How?

• This was made possible by keeping the wages low and the Marshallplan. 

What was the Marshallplan?

Reasons

• The Americans didn't help just because they were nice...
•  A prosperous Europe wouldn't choose communism
• A prosperous Europe would buy products from the USA.

Different

• Agriculture was modernised! 
• The industry was modernised as well which led to new jobs.

The mentality was also different during the fifties...

In what way was the mentality different?

Law-abiding

• People were extremely law-abiding.  
• People wanted to live frugally (=sober)

Luxury

• Only since 1963, when unions asked for raises, common people had enough money for luxurious things.
