Can be used in the same sentence when an action was already in progress when another action happened.
I was walking down the street when it started to rain.

Alibi game
Last night at around 3 AM a group of students snuck into the classroom and stole your test results, that you have worked so hard on. They are nowhere to be found. But luckily the detectives in this class are going to figure out who did it.

ask the suspect questions
(use the past simple and past continuous)
Write down which group they suspect the most

The detectives have 3 minutes to question each group.
After 3 minutes the detectives go to the next group.
After the detectives have questioned each group they write down which group they suspect the most.
