Ask yourself, would you use words such as: you're, couldn't or didn't in formal letters?

Goals for today's class!

• You know the difference between formal and informal English.
• Name different contractions and translate them to two words.
• How to apply formal English using two words.

What are contractions and why are these words informal?

• Words that contain an apostrophe (').
• Contraction: it's
• Two words: it is
• Often seen as slang (straattaal).

Think about which form you use more often.

You're or You are

He's or He is

Didn't or Did not

You may discuss this in groups of up to two people.

Today's assignment

Go to this > website < and write down the contracted words and it's formal meaning which you haven't used as much.

After writing these down you will write short sentences using the formal form. You may use the internet or your neighbor (quietly) for support.

Example: It is nice writing you again.
