Relative Clauses
Relative clauses geven aan wie een spreker bedoelt: 

"The woman who lives next door is kind of crazy."
"People who like dogs often hate cats."
"Cats that are overweight eat too much food."
"My car, which was repaired last week, broke down again."

Who/Which/That = Subject
Als who/which/that een onderdeel is van het onderwerp van de zin, dan kun je het niet weglaten: 

"The woman who lives next door is a doctor."
         (x The woman lives next door is a doctor. )
"Where is the cheese which was in the fridge?"
         (x Where is the cheese was in the fridge?)

Who/Which/That = Object
Als who/which/that hoort bij het lijdend voorwerp in de zin, dan kun je het wel weglaten: 

"The woman (who) I wanted to see was away on holiday."
            (I wanted to see the woman)
"Have you found the keys (that) you lost?"
            (You lost the keys)

Type 1 and 2
Type 1 = vertelt je welk persoon of ding je bedoelt + is specifiek 
                 en kan niet worden weggelaten: 
                 "The man who lives next door is a carpenter."

Type 2 = vertelt iets extra's en kan worden weggelaten: 
                 "My brother Harry, who lives in Berlin, is a carpenter."

Overige woorden:
- Whose = van wie ("whose car, whose dog")
- Whom = formele versie van wie ("whom I admire very much")
- Where = plaatsen ("the restaurant where we ate")

Soms in combinatie met voorzetsels: 
"Mr Lee, to whom I spoke .."       "A good map without which we .."
"three brothers, all of whom / none of whom / some of whom, ..."
