John Steinbeck – 1902-1968

John Steinbeck’s novels are set in his native California, interested in the fate of the ordinary working man.

He also wrote about the bad conditions during the Great Depression of the 30s.

His style is simple and straightforward

He won the Nobel Prize in 1962

Famous work: East of Eden (1952)

Main character Cal’s struggle between good and evil (Cain and Abel in a modern setting)

Task 12b:
Describe the relations between Cal and Aron, their father Adam, and others

Task 12b

Cal and Aron: brothers, Aron is beautiful (blonde) and Cal isn’t (dark). The characteristics that Aron possess are liked but not when Cal does it.

People preferred Aron over Cal (even now he has no friends and lives alone).

Cal’s father Adam doesn’t pay Cal attnetino. Cal seeks affection and gets it by sitting closely, father is most likely unaware of this

Task 12c:
Compare this fragment with the story of Cain and Abel

Task 12c

God accepted Abel’s (Aron) offering and accepted him, God rejected Cain’s (Cal) offering.
