The Past Continuous

was / were + hele werkwoord + -ing

How to create it?

The Past Continuous

Wanneer gebruiken we deze vorm? 

- als iets in het verleden een tijdje duurde of aan de gang was:

This time last year I  was living in Hong Kong

- wanneer een actie nog bezig is, maar onderbroken wordt: 

We were watching TV, when the door bell rang

Wanneer gebruiken we deze vorm? 

- als iets in het verleden een tijdje duurde of aan de gang was:

Past Simple,

is de onderbreking

bevestigend / ontkennend / vragend

Spellingsverandering bij het maken van de -ing-vorm

- Als het werkwoord eindigt op een -e, laat je die weg:

   to lose -- losing; to have -- having 

- Als het werkwoord eindigt op een medeklinker met één klinker ervoor, dan       verdubbel je de medeklinker:

   to hit -- hitting; to get -- getting

                    Dit geldt niet als het werkwoord eindigt op een -w of een -x:

                       to snow -- snowing

- Als het werkwoord eindigt op -ie, verandert dat in -y

   to tie -- tying; to lie -- lying

Past Simple / Past Continuous

- De Past Simple is de meest simpele vorm

- De Past Continuous wordt gebruikt om te zeggen dat iets in het verleden een tijdje bezig was.

alles dat duidelijk het verleden aanduidt.

deze signaalwoorden zijn lang niet altijd aanwezig.

Present Perfect / Past Simple

- Bij de Past Simple wordt altijd aangegeven wanneer het gebeurd is en is de actie in het verleden afgerond.

- Bij de Present Perfect is er de actie begonnen in het verleden, maar is er nog een connectie met het heden.
