  1. Something happened in the past and it is not important when. Ex: Yes, I have done my homework.
  2. Something started in the past and is still ging on. Look for words like: for, since, in
    Ex: I have played padel for three years / since 2020.

4. Something just happened or hasn't happened yet. Look for words like: just, lately, recently, yet.

For example: When I was taking a shower, the bell rang.

  • We use the past continuous to talk about what happened in the background. It describes a longer activity. Often the word ‘while’ is used.

  • The past simple is then used to describe a shorter activity that interrupts (=onderbreekt) the longer activity, or happens at the same time.
