Back shifting - tenses

I get to school at 8 o'clock.

She said she got to school at 8 o'clock.

Present Simple → Past Simple

He is telling a lie 

She said that he was telling a lie

Present Continuous → Past Continuous

He has told a lie 

She said that he had told a lie

Present Perfect → Past Perfect 

He told a lie                                        

She said that he had told a lie 

Past Simple → Past Perfect 

He was telling a lie                          

She said that he had been telling a lie 

Past Continuous → Past Perfect Continuous  

He had told a lie                               

She said that he had told a lie 

Past perfect → Past Perfect  

Backshifting - Modals

He will tell a lie                She said that he would tell a lie

Will → would

He can tell a lie               She said that he could tell a lie

Can →could

He should tell a lie         She said that he should tell a lie

Should →should / should have + past participle

Step by step guide

Step 1: Find the verb and change it to the past.

Step 2: Change the pronouns and time.

Step 3: Add the word ''that'' behind ''said''.

Step 4: Change the subject if necessary.

She said, "I will come here after class."

1. Statement - so we use say or tell

2. will come - would come

3. I - she

4. here - there

She said that she would come there after class.

She told me that she would come there after class.

"I was on holiday last week", he told us. 

1. Statement - told

2. was - had been

3. I - he

4. last week - the previous week

He told us he had been on holiday the previous week.

Practise: Reported Speech

You will change direct speech into reported speech

Example: 

'I want to make it crystal clear to everyone just exactly 

what's expected'.

She clarified exactly what was expected. 

1. "I was waiting for the bus when he arrived."
