Modal verbs 
Met een modal verb verander je de betekenis van een werkwoord. 
In plaats van gewoon "Ik zwem" zeg je bijvoorbeeld: 
Ik kan zwemmen, ik wil zwemmen, ik moet zwemmen, ik mag niet zwemmen, ik zou moeten zwemmen, ik kon zwemmen... 

Het is het makkelijkst om de Nederlandse vertalingen te leren. 
Dan is de rest nog puur een kwestie van lezen.

Can / Can't / Could / Couldn't 
1. Kunnen / niet kunnen / Konden / Konden niet 
I can swim. When I was five I couldn't swim yet. 

2. Mogen, niet mogen, mochten, mochten niet. 
You can have some chocolate if you like. We couldn't leave before our homework was finished.

1. Zou moeten / zou niet moeten 

You should pay more attention in class if you want to do well. 

You shouldn't smoke, it's bad for you
