§1 Canada: a vast and empty country

A vast country

• Geography is about areas.

• A part of the Earth’s surface = area or region.

Topography: description of a place or region.

Small or large part of the Earth’s surface. Another word: region.

Map  =  a downsized drawing of an area

General map: a map that shows cities, rivers, seas, mountains, roads and railways (Figure 1).

Types of maps

Thematic map. about one subject 

Theme Figure 3 = population density in Canada

• The south of Canada is densely populated.

• The north of Canada is sparsely populated.

• The population distribution is uneven.

• It is too cold to live in the north of Canada.
  

Population density

number of inhabitants per km²

The distribution of people across a country or region.

How to calculate population density:

Calculate: In the Netherlands 16,750,000 people live on a surface area of 41,500 km.

16,750,000 : 41,500 = 403,61

Map skills

You need four things to read a map:

● Title: subject and/or region in the map,

● Legend: meaning of the colours and symbols,

● Scale: how much smaller the region is,

● North arrow

What is the distance in real?

1 : 850,000

This means that 1 cm on the map is 850,000 cm in real terms
