Past simple: finished actions in the past. He workeda lot. He didn't rest.
Past continuous: past situation was temporary or something was going on. They weren't preparingfor their exams. I was sleepingwhen the bell rang.
Used to: for habits and situations in the past that no longer happen in the present. He used togo out every Friday night. I used toforget my keys all the time.
Would: for habits (NOT situations) in the past. He would go out every Friday night.
