Grammar: future tense

Different futures

If you want to express something that is going to happen in the future, you can use different ways to express future tense.

- present simple

- to be going to 

What is the difference?

Something is scheduled to happen. 

Example: The shop opens at 08:00 am.

Example 2: The trains arrives at 10:00 am.

                                      Present simple.

Als iets volgens een vast schema of rooster gebeurd, dan gebruik je de present simple. 

What is the difference?

Something is planned and is certain to happen: 'to be going to'.

Example: I am going to visit my grandmother this Friday.

Example 2: We are going to work on Saturday.

                                         to be + going to + infinitive

Als iets zeker gaat gebeuren, dan gebruik je:

                   werkvorm van "to be" + "going to" + hele werkwoord

What are you going to do tonight?

1. Jill and I will be watching a film tonight.
2. Jill and I will be going to watch a film tonight.
3. Jill and I watch a film tonight.
4. Jill and I are going to watch a film tonight.

Sorry, I have no time, because I (prepare) a presentation.

1. will prepare
2. going preparing
3. will going to prepare
4. am going to prepare

I (eat) my sandwich for lunch.

1. am going to eat
2. will eating
3. Will eat
4. will going to
