There is more...

3. Sometimes we use a plural noun for one thing that has two parts:
Examples: Pyjamas / glasses / scissors -> they also take a plural verb: My jeans ARE too long.

4. Some nouns end in –ICS or S, but are not usually plural: Examples: Politics / Athletics / News

5. Some nouns ending in –S can be singular or plural. Examples: a television series - two television series

6. We think of a sum of money, a period of time, a distance as one thing. So we use a singular verb:
Two miles (=it) isn’t far.
Three years (=it) is a long time.
Fifty pounds (=it) was stolen

7. Some singular nouns are often used with a plural verb, as they are often groups of people (=they) and not as one thing (=it). Audience / Committee / company / family / firm / government / staff / team
To make it a little bit more difficult you are also allowed to use
a singular verb with these nouns.

But: we always use a plural verb with Police:
The police are investigating the crime.
