Past Simple
  • WHEN: Gebruik de Past Simple wanneer je het hebt over een gebeurtenis op een bepaald moment in het verleden.
  • RULE REGULAR VERBS: base form of verb + -ed
  • Signaalwoorden: Last year, yesterday, an hour ago.

  • I knocked on your door at noon.

Past Continuous
WHEN: Gebruik de Past Continuous wanneer je het hebt over een gebeurtenis die in het verleden een tijdje aan de gang was, maar nu klaar is.
RULE: subject + was/were + base+-ing
EXAMPLE: I was eating lunch with a friend at noon.
Ik ben voor twaalf uur begonnen met lunchen en ging daar na twaalf uur mee verder.

The Past Continuous describes situations that go on for some time – ‘skiing’ and ‘playing’
I was eating lunch with a friend at noon.

The Past Simple describes ‘actions’ that happen quickly – ‘broke’ and ‘rang’.
I knocked on your door at noon.
