We used said in reported speech before, but there are more verbs you can use. Sometimes the sentences change slightly. Look at the examples below:

Before:                                                                                         New:
The assistant said that the Daleks were coming.    The assistant warned us that the Daleks were                                                                                                               coming.
The said we had to leave the car at home.                  They told us to leave the car at home.
The doctor said that I should take a break.                 The doctor advised me to take a break.
