What is an adjective? Give a definition and examples

Adjectives
  • words that describe nouns (looks, size, texture, taste, etc)
  • ex: enormous, huge, soft, fuzzy, disgusting, delicious

  • can also describe quantity (how much)
  • ex: many, few, millions, eleven

  • They can also be used with verbs "to be"
  • ex: That cow is happy; Driving is faster than walking
  • Here, the adjectives are describing states of the noun

Comparatives vs. Superlatives
  • Comparatives are when comparing two things
  • Ex: Chris is cooler than Jack; This dog is fatter than that dog

  • Superlatives are used when comparing more than two things
  • Ex: January is the coldest month of the year; Blue whales are the largest mammals in the world

  • Usually, but not always, end in -ly
  • ex: He walks slowly; She talks loudly

  • She sang most loudly in the class
